Pattern Report: Bias Cut Skirt from One Yard Wonders

I love sewing and craft books. My daughter and I are always looking for new craft ideas as well as new and better ways to do our crafts. One Yard Wonders caught my eye in the book store since we have been making an effort to upcycle fiber recovered from old clothes, sheets and other household items. Often the amount of recovered fabric is limited.

One Yard Wonders includes patterns (in a pocket part) for the many of the projects described in the book. We decided to use the pattern and instructions for the bias cut skirt to make a skirt from fabric of an old sheet-- fabric that we still had after making both a shower curtain and a grocery tote bag.

The first skirt we made was a fine pattern, but not a good look for either my daughter or I. The project called for an elastic waistband and the finished project looked the same on both of us. We both looked like we were wearing a potato sack.

Bias Cut Skirts with Modifications
So we used the same pattern from the book, but added two darts to the front of the dress, a waist band lined with Pellon fusible interfacing and a 7-inch zipper on the side seam. We liked the results so much we used scrap fabric from different quilting projects to create three new skirts.
